"Hey, Dr. Just! What's the deal with retainers?"

If you recently completed treatment at Just Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you, again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Jeffrey Just will provide you with retainers. After braces are removed the teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receiver your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until Dr. Just instructs otherwise.
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practicing speaking, reading, or singing aloud to get used to them quicker is a good idea.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Try to remember to bring your retainers to your appointments.
* Retainer replacement is expensive, but with proper care they will last for years!
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).
* Keep retainers away from hot water, pockets, the washing machine and napkins.

We hope this helps! You can always contact us if you have any questions by giving us a call or asking Dr. Just and staff on Facebook!

Happy Halloween from Just Orthodontics!

happy halloween Pictures, Images and Photos

Trick-or-treat! In the spirit of this weekend's sweet and spooky holiday, Dr. Jeffrey Just and our staff at Just Orthodontics would like to remind all of our patients in Green Bay, Manitowoc and Sheboygan to be safe while celebrating with friends and family. The American Association of Orthodontists were kind enough to provide trick-or-treaters with some tips for a ghoulishly good time.

A few Halloween safety guidelines:
• Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
• Carry a flashlight
• Wear a light-colored or reflective costume
• Choose face paint over masks for young ghosts and goblins
• Have an adult inspect all treats before the children dig in

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment. If you happen to damage your braces, please give us a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone.

We wish you all a safe, fun and happy Halloween weekend!

Ask Just Orthodontics: What's Invisalign, and is it right for me? [Video]

We've discussed the power of Invisalign in previous posts, but today thought we'd share a helpful video for those who are intrigued by the idea of straightening their teeth without using traditional metal braces. The Invisalign system at Just Orthodontics is a state-of-the-art system of clear, removable aligners that we proudly offer to adults and teens at our convenient offices in Green Bay, Manitowoc and Sheboygan. We have plenty of resources on our website to check out about Invisalign, or give our office a call for a complimentary consultation to learn if this revolutionary new treatment option is right for you!

Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in our office getting adjustments. Dr. Jeffrey Just is a Certified Invisalign® Provider in Green Bay, Manitowoc and Sheboygan.

We look forward to seeing you!

Cold & flu season is back, from Just Orthodontics

It's fall, and the cold and flu season is once again upon us. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, says that a common cold usually includes sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and coughing. Symptoms can last for up to two weeks, according to the CDC.

To promote a healthy and clean environment, Dr. Just and our staff at Just Orthodontics give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Green Bay offices at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces. For the protection of other patients and our staff, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

And remember to constantly wash your hands and avoid contact with those who are ill! Have a great rest of your weekend!

Fun fact Friday with Just Orthodontics!

At Just Orthodontics, we know our patients love fun facts. After all, who doesn't? The American Association of Orthodontists came up with some fun facts about orthodontics that Dr. Jeffrey Just and our team thought you might enjoy. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

• There are nearly 4 million people in orthodontic treatment throughout the United States. Three out of four are younger than 18.

• The first mechanical treatment for correcting irregular teeth was suggested by Gaius Plinius Secundus (A.D 23-79).The American Association of Orthodontists is comprised of more than 12,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.

• The time required to complete orthodontic treatment ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

• Of the 160,000 dentists in the United States and Canada, 8,000 are practicing orthodontists.

• The cement that attaches the braces to the teeth is now made with a special fluoride-releasing substance.

• Wires activated by body heat used in today's braces originally were developed by NASA for use in the space program.

• In addition to alleviating or preventing physical health problems, orthodontics can boost self-esteem as treatment aligns teeth, jaws and lips.

• Famous orthodontic patients include: Dr. Joyce Brothers, Hale Irwin, Cher, Diana Ross, Phyllis Diller, Chelsea Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Daisy Fuentes and Brandi.

Just Orthodontics, supporting National Orthodontic Health Month!

Happy Friday! October is National Orthodontic Health Month. Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have provided a helpful list of tips and recipes for the Halloween Season.

Dr. Just and our staff recommend you check out the article. If you have any follow-up questions, please feel free to give us a call, ask us on Facebook or ask Dr. Just during your visit this month at any of our convenient locations in Green Bay, Manitowoc or Sheboygan!

Hey, Dr. Just! Why are straight teeth so important, anyway?

Believe it or not, but we've heard this question before!

Some people ask us why Dr. Jeffrey Just and our team at Just Orthodontics work so tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s great to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean! If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, give us a call to set up a consultation. Dr. Just and his team can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

What's on your mind? Tell Dr. Just!

By now, you're probably familiar with the drill: Week after week, Dr. Just and team blog about important topics pertinent to orthodontic treatment care and your well-being, including innovative orthodontic techniques we offer.

This week, though, we thought we’d step back and ask you, our wonderful patients and readers: what’s on your mind? What would you like to know about the always-changing field of orthodontics? What would you like us to focus on our blog in the coming months? Perhaps there’s something you’ve wanted to ask us for a while now? Let us know by posting here or on our Facebook fan page!

So… take it away and we’ll try to answer any questions you may have!

Dr. Just, reminding you September is Childhood Injury Prevention Month!

This month, our entire staff at Just Orthodontics want you to be extra careful with your braces and appliances. After all, September marks the start of fall sports and an increased risk to mouth injuries. September also happens to be National Childhood Injury Prevention Month, and Dr. Jeffrey Just thought it’d be a good idea to share a few sobering facts about sports and facial injuries, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.

*More than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Collision and contact sports have higher injury rates—baseball, soccer, basketball and football account for about 80% of all sports-related emergency room visits, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

*Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet, 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt.

*Of the parents whose children do not wear a mouth guard, 84 percent say it's because the league or coach does not require it, according to the AAO.

*The average high school baseball pitcher can throw a fast ball between 75-to-85 miles per hour. This compares to being hit in the mouth by a speeding car!

We hope this helps you remember to wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in sports around Green Bay, Manitowoc or Sheboygan this fall! We encourage you to give us a call if you have any questions!

Ask Dr. Just: Why the Damon™ System?

Dr. Jeffrey Just and our dedicated team at Just Orthodontics are pleased to offer The Damon System for our patients in Green Bay, Manitowoc and Sheboygan. Damon braces allow your teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces. Thanks to these innovative new braces, achieving your perfect smile will be faster and easier than you ever thought possible.

You're probably saying, "All right, Dr. Just. How are Damon braces an advantage?"

Time-Saving

Damon's innovative technology of self-ligating braces saves you time in orthodontic treatment. The Damon system allows for fewer trips to our office, as well as faster movement of your teeth than with traditional braces. The light forces applied by Damon braces are "biologically compatible" meaning that they work with your body for gentler and quicker tooth movement.

Comfortable

Damon System braces have a unique slide mechanism that allows Dr. Just to use far lighter forces to move teeth to their correct positions. That makes your treatment not only shorter, but it is also far more comfortable.

Because of its unique sliding door, the Damon bracket allows us to use high-tech, light-force wires to achieve tooth movement. This means less pressure on your teeth for more comfortable treatment. Not every orthodontist uses Damon self-ligating braces. The reason Dr. Just does is simple: it means your experience in uncovering your radiant new smile will be more comfortable and convenient than ever.

To learn more about the Damon System, or to schedule a free initial consultation with Dr. Just, please give us a call. Happy Wednesday!

Ask Dr. Just: Why are regular checkups so important?

Our staff at Just Orthodontics want to know: Are you brushing your teeth twice a day during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Just? If the answer is yes, that’s what we want to hear! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every six months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting Just Orthodontics, of course). An oral checkup is vital for maintaining good oral health for kids with and without braces.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth during your treatment.

During an oral exam, the dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, please let Dr. Just or one of our staff members know during your next visit with us, and we will provide a few great references in Sheboygan, Manitowoc or Green Bay!

Happy Friday and have a wonderful weekend! :)

Insignia Braces at Just Orthodontics

Let's say you're getting braces this summer. While you’re excited about finally having that great, gorgeous smile, you may be nervous about wearing wires and brackets for two or more years. Well, Dr. Jeffrey Just and our staff want to tell you about an orthodontic system that makes straightening your teeth with braces a lot faster and easier compared to conventional orthodontic treatment. It’s called Insignia, and it’s changing the way people feel about their braces.

While traditional orthodontic treatments take two or more years, it’s not true for Insignia. Through the use of Insignia’s sophisticated 3-D imaging, treatment planning, and customized braces with customized precision archwires, Dr. Just can reduce treatment time compared to that of conventional braces.

In addition to shortening treatment times, the greater efficiency of the Insignia system at Just Orthodontics also helps reduce the number of wire changes and adjustments you’ll need, and that means fewer trips to our office. The Insignia system’s 3-D software lets Dr. Just analyze how to effectively and efficiently align your teeth. Through this software, personalized archwires are designed to move your teeth into proper alignment smoothly and directly, reducing the number of maintenance visits. Unlike traditional orthodontics and their “one size fits all” approach, Insignia Advanced Smile Design customizes braces and wires to you. The result is a radiant smile that reflects your individuality.

Give us a call and ask us about this revolutionary treatment! Enjoy the rest of your week!

If you've been thinking about having your own set of perfectly-aligned teeth, Dr. Jeffrey Just and our staff at Just Orthodontics are here to help! Dr. Just is a certified provider of an adult-friendly option for straightening teeth called Invisalign.

Invisalign consists of a set of clear aligners that are molded to fit your teeth and are to be worn all day and night, except for meals, brushing, and flossing – when you can easily slip them out to make eating and cleaning a snap!

Because they're clear, your teeth will be steadily straightening – and the best part? No one will know it but you! Please give us a call to set up a free consultation, so we can discuss the specifics of your treatment.

Remember to wear those mouth guards this summer!

We just can't believe summer is already halfway over! As the temperatures climb, the chances for mouth injuries for our athletes in treatment get likelier and likelier. Dr. Just and our entire team would like to remind our young athletes to always take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports.

That includes wearing a mouth guard at all times when you're out on the field. Only by using a mouth guard can athletes with and without braces avoid serious mouth injuries. And don't forget to ask us for a mouth guard - we will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment! And remember, Just Orthodontics is an authorized provider of Under Armour mouth guards and UA Performance Mouthwear.

We hope you're having a great summer so far!

Sleep disorders and treatment options in east Wisconsin

Are you drowsy during the day with no explanation? Do you snore loudly, or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? If so, you may be one of more than 12 million Americans affected by sleep apnea, says Dr. Jeffrey Just.

Sleep apnea is considered a serious medical problem that, if left untreated, can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart failure and stroke. It can also take a toll on your overall energy level, as sleep apnea causes an ongoing state of fatigue.

There are several different approaches to sleep apnea treatment, including:

• Surgery to the jaws or airway tissue to open the airway. This is typically only used in the most severe cases.

• Continuous airway pressure therapy which involves a mask and machine (CPAP machine) to keep your throat muscles and tissue open while sleeping

• Oral appliance therapy, a less intrusive method involving a customized oral device that positions your jaw in a favorable position to keep your airway open while you sleep.

If you suspect that you may suffer from a sleep disorder or sleep apnea, give us a call at our convenient locations in Green Bay, Sheboygan or Manitowoc.

Thank you again." ~ Terrance H.

Dr. Just and team want to know: what are your summer plans?

As the school year comes to a close for many of our patients at Just Orthodontics, the days get longer and the sun finally begins to heat up, there’s no better way to beat the heat than jump into a pool or cool off under the shade with a nice beverage.

For most of our patients, summer brings a chance to get away from it all and escape everyday life, if only for a week or two. For others, it means a season of relaxation and relief from homework and studying, among other activities.

How about you?

What are your summer plans? Do you have any interesting plans for a summer vacation? Does your family have a reunion planned? Our entire staff (as well as Dr. Just) would be interested in how you are all spending your summer vacations. If you’re headed to an exotic destination, awesome! If you're going camping, we'd like to hear about it! Even if you're hanging out at home, let us know!

Please feel free to share your summer plans and adventures on our Facebook page as the summer rolls along!

Talkin' retainers with the Just Orthodontics team

If you recently completed treatment with Dr. Jeffrey Just, our professional team would like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Just will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, Dr. Just and our team will tell you teeth may - and sometimes do - shift out of position if they are not stabilized.

Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Just is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

If you have additional questions about retainers or your treatment here at Just Orthodontics, please give us a call! We hope you all have a splendid weekend!

Smile, and you might just live longer! From Dr. Jeffrey Just

People with big smiles may actually live than those who don’t, according to a new study at Michigan’s Wayne State University. Our staff at Just Orthodontics has known for quite some time that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something quite interesting: they looked at photos of 230 ball-players who began their careers in baseball prior to 1950.

The players' photos were enlarged, and then studied their smile intensity (ranging from big smile, no smile or partial smile). The players' smile ratings were compared with data from deaths that occurred from 2006 through 2009. The researchers then took into account other factors that impact life longevity, including body mass index, career length and even college attendance.

The results? Researchers found that players who weren't smiling in the photos died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old.

So, smile now, smile often and you might just live longer! Have you been perfecting your smile by visiting Dr. Jeffrey Just on a regular basis? If not, give us a call!

Just Orthodontics, helping you save face this spring

You may recall that last week, our staff discussed the importance of wearing a mouth guard. Today, Dr. Just and team thought we'd follow-up by showing you a quick video of the quick and easy ways you can protect your pearly whites this spring. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year.

That's why our team at Just Orthodontics decided to help spread the word today. After all, April, which comes our way tomorrow, happens to be National Facial Protection Month. We hope this video helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of the tips offered in the video, please give us a call. And remember to have fun and stay safe!

Protecting your mouth during sports, with Dr. Jeffrey Just

Wouldn’t you believe it, it’s already springtime! Dr. Jeffrey Just knows, however, that the spring months bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their precious pearly whites. If you play sports, it's important that you consult Dr. Just for special precautions, such as wearing a mouth guard.

A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball, soccer, lacrosse and others. Be sure, however, to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements that Dr. Just is trying to achieve.

In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with Just Orthodontics. And don’t forget to ask us—Dr. Just will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment. Remember, Just Orthodontics is an authorized provider of Under Armour mouth guards and UA Performance Mouthwear.

Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment here at Just Orthodontics.

Ask Dr. Just: Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Recently, our staff at Just Orthodontics read a fascinating statistic: adults getting braces has jumped 24 percent from just 14 years ago! In fact, did you know one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over the age of 21?

In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing to invest in orthodontics. While orthodontic treatment is often associated with teens, adult orthodontics and braces at our Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Green Bay offices can achieve amazing results for adult patients. With treatments such as Invisalign®, you can have your teeth straightened less noticeably. Orthodontic treatment at Just Orthodontics can be successful at any age, and Dr. Just knows adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Just and our entire team would love to have you visit for a consultation. Give us a call to set one up!

Ask Dr. Just: When should my child come in for a check-up?

Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Dr. Just, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That’s right—seven.

Ok, so what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Just and our dedicated team to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what Dr. Just calls “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. So, if your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, give us a call at Just Orthodontics to schedule an appointment.

Dr. Jeffrey Just and Just Orthodontics, supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month

Each February for the past 60 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.

If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Dr. Jeffrey Just is available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment with us. Have you visited Just Orthodontics lately? Give us a call and schedule an appointment!

Dr. Jeffrey Just discusses the Damon® System

We've told you about the advantage of Invisalign treatment and other treatments at Just Orthodontics, but today thought we'd share some information on the Damon® System.

A lot of our patients, (especially you parents!) come to Dr. Jeffrey Just thinking traditional braces are the only answer to straight teeth. Here at Just Orthodontics, we offer the Damon System, a revolutionary new braces system that can give you better results in less time!

Am I right for the Damon System?

Dr. Just will evaluate your eligibility for the Damon System, and the procedure can be performed for children and adults alike!

What makes Damon braces better?

Probably the biggest advantage of Damon braces over traditional brackets is the amount of time and effort involved. Just Orthodontics can often cut months off of the total treatment time for patients using the Damon System, and less visits to our office are necessary to make adjustments.

If you have any questions about the Damon System or your treatment here at Just Orthodontics, please let us know by posting here or giving us a call!

Have a great weekend!

A few helpful Invisalign® tips, from Just Orthodontics

You may remember we blogged about the advantage of Invisalign a couple of weeks ago. Today, we thought we'd share a few helpful Invisalign tips with you, our terrific patients.

When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Dr. Just wants you to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.

2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.

3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits. If you have any questions about Invisalign or your treatment here at Just Orthodontics, please don't hesitate to give us a call!

Is Invisalign® really customized for each patient? Dr. Just has the answer

Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work, says Dr. Just. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next, Dr. Just and our team use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. And since the aligners are virtually invisible, nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Just is a certified Invisalign provider. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, give us a call.

Happy Wednesday!
